Man 2016 was a great year to be a Winona fan, and not just cause of Stranger Things.
Two of our members (one current and one former) should come out to be singled out for applause.
Wish Wolf (one of our older members for the new ones here) were still around, despite his occasional crazy rants (and me wondering how much he was making up and wasn't) this is the year that finally vindicated his most memorable talking point: that Winona's problems weren't some unique affliction of Hollywood eccentricity or decadence. And now the shoe is on every other foot.
Everyone now is out there calling opioid addiction America's worst drug epidemic. Obama's talking about it as are all the comedy shows and the news outlets. The world just found out it killed one of America's most beloved artists (another Minnesota-born, Prince Rogers Nelson)
The same year the number one series on Netflix is about Pablo Escobar it's revealed that America's biggest drug epidemic began with legally obtained painkillers from personal physicians. Irony galore.
Funny thing: when I saw that interview on John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" coverage of the epidemic where some guy was talking about how badly opioid addiction caused him to self-harm for another fix I felt like sneering, "So yeah, where were you when Winona needed you, huh?" Man that was one helluva release. Sorry Joe Redneck, I had so much spleen to vent.
I have to say 2016 vindicated Bigdaddy too as the year Gwyneth Paltrow (an old joke here for newcomers) descended into full-on semi-retired walking joke status. A look at IMDb shows all her prospective flicks are dead in the water and despite signing on as Pepper Potts, she seems to have been written out of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe for the time being. Not just that there's this book written by a Canadian doctor using her as the ultimate example in self-proclaimed Hollywood health experts. I'm not one for schademfreude generally but sorry ma'am, you brought it upon yourself. For the longest time I was gnashing my teeth over why Winona refused to play the celebrity game like most of her contemporaries and "losing out on her best years" and Bigdaddy was liking her for it, I couldn't see why. Then after years of character actress work she snatches an iconic role from the jaws of time when most actresses her age are more or less getting their least remarkable roles, I see Winona's wisdom at last. Sooner or later if you ain't careful the celebrity game ends up playing you anyway, so why even play it to begin with? I'm humbled, really am.
Being a Winona Ryder fan is a unique experience, no other actress will ever surprise you so much for the better.
