Sundance interview with Winona and Peter Sarsgaard.I dunno if this is meant to a secret swipe at someone in the IRON MAN films, but wouldn't it be fun if it was? Peter, you have “The Slap” coming up on NBC, which has a star-studded cast that also includes Zachary Quinto and Uma Thurman. And Winona, you seem to be taking fewer film projects as the years go by. Would it be accurate to assume that film is losing some its luster for actors?
SARSGAARD: Here’s the thing: There’s more interesting work being done in low-budget film, and that’s similar to some of television. There’s more similarities between those two things than there is between a low-budget film and a big-budget film.
RYDER: The big-budget ones are all just Marvel, anyway.

I don't think it has been 15 years at the centre of her thoughts,...but I would not doubt she got the script, heard Depp was interested, and sort of smiled and took the call. This is a lady who has her image on her mind at all times, and I will bet a burrito it rankles her that Ryder would be viewed by just about anybody as a more credible actress then she is...I think she also tries to play against her image...(SHALLOW HAL, say...) but that is still being at all times image minded, right?
Thing is, money and celeb can't buy street cred, and I think that drives her nuts.
To me it's the only motive for her following Depp down that rabbit hole of a film that she did that makes sense. She doesn't need a pay day THAT bad...
The Marvel comment I just see as a short form for Ryder to identify what what is stalling in Hollywood...the franchise, toy store, comic book, multi sequel juggernaut that she can side step.
In IRONMAN Paltrow is really part of the furniture...I think the butler gets more notice...

I certainly think there is good reason to gloat if you can sidestep the franchise juggernauts and youngsters still check your old work out. I fully give Winona that privilege.
Along with being one of the few human beings to be immune to Scarlett's front bumper and Hathaway's headlights and grille.
Also, a company has bought the rights to remake ten AIP films and set them all in a single universe. I sincerely hope they slam dunk this one and reinvent franchise filmmaking for the better: a space for low to mid budget funk with real imagination.
BTW any actress who for me wants to upstage Ryder in any performance needs just to do one thing: sing well.

BTW, a Marvel film did provide one of my favorite gags of 2014.
When Nixon steps forward willing to take a bullet for his cabinet in X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST and then reveals himself to be a shapeshifting female mutant in disguise.
Anyone who says comic book movies can't be realistic has to eat their words NOW.

Speaking of, and according to, Variety.com, and if anyone here doesn't already know, HBO's "Show Me A Hero" will premiere in August...this year. Yeah, really. (Yahoo! Finally! ... and all that swill stuff)
Be good...
