Drifter(Fonda, who also directs) seeks to avenge a friend's murder, and reunite with his estranged wife, but she will only take him back as a hired hand. Quite different than your standard western, moves steady but slow, with stunning cinematography by Vilmos Zsigmond, and a beautiful unobtrusive score by Bruce Langhorne. (film restored in 2001)

Is it a noble failure, a forgotten classic, or some combination of the two? A wonderful movie I come back to seeing...but have never made my mind up on. Peter Fonda looks a lot like his dad, and the music sound track is acoustic and hypnotic. Barely released by Universal in the early 70's. Made with EASY RIDER money. Better then his next directorial effort THE IDAHO TRANSFER...(which does not make IDAHO TRANSFER bad...it's flawed but worth a look...) Maybe this is the kind of vibe Camino was looking for in HEAVEN'S GATE and one of the reasons that movie left me cold. Available with Fonda's commentary on DVD...

Really worth a viewing. Beautiful soundtrack too.
