Lang's first talkie, and Lorre's first film, in a tale about a disturbed child murderer hunted down in a terrified city.
Not the least bit dated, fascinating, and an ending totally unpredictable.
German with subtitles.

One of the all time greats. Lorre, by the way could not whistle. That was dubbed in. His daughter says he was really BUGGED by the character. He was a sweet guy in real life and it sincerely BOTHERED him to think folks might confuse him with that character. Based on an actual case, where the cops and crooks combined forces to find the Dusseldorf Child Murderer.
The producer, Seymour Nebenzal, actually took Rusty's advice and tried for an English language remake in Hollywood in 1951 (it didn't work...). One of three films Lang made with Otto Wernicke as Inspector Lohmann. The other two are his 'Dr Mabuse" movies and are classics in their own right.

I enjoyed watching "M" the other night so much I didn't mention something about the movie that was so interesting, every scene in which people are smoking cigarettes, pipes and cigars, they were puffing away like volcanos, with clouds of smoke in the room. (Barf, gag, heave!) ----- ----- Rusty
