As a MOVIE, it was great...lot of fun, suspense...great music and locations and cast.
As HISTORY, it was a bit off..there was no chasing the plane down the runway...everybody got away and everyone at the airport believed the cover story. Their work was flawless, and the Canadian government itself made the passports that got them out. Ambassador KEN TAYLOR bought the tickets himself and had final veto as to call off the mission or not.
There is a video of Carter where he attempts to set the record straight.
As usual, Carter himself is too modest. During the long negotiations, he had to have conference after conference with the Iranians and swallowed more then his share of humiliating demands. One time, one of the Iranians on the side said, in broken English that it would be simpler and better just to kill them all. Carter just STARED and said:"One hostage equals one oil well." Then gave the man that STARE of his that left no room for anyone to think he was bluffing. The man replied, (this time, in very crisp, precise English);"Well done, sir."
Two people deserve to be singled out as well. Iran went ballistic after the Shah was allowed to come to America for cancer treatment. Carter never WANTED the Shah in America to BEGIN with, that was Kissinger and David Rockefeller putting pressure on him to do it. And they NEVER came out and said;"You know, we probably STARTED this whole thing, lets cut the guy slack." Nope. The kicks to the body from both (especially Kissinger) never stopped. Carter was called a weakling for not going in, guns blazing to get the hostages back. His failed rescue mission to free the hostages cooked his election goose after he accepted responsibility.
And, depending who you believe, Bill Casey and Bush the Elder cut a deal with the Iranians after Carter lost. They could KEEP the hostages until AFTER Reagan was sworn in...nobody would be angry, there would be NO repercussions. THAT part we know... The part that remains in dispute is if these guys gave the Iranians guns for this. Some say the Iranians were MORE then happy to keep the hostages until Jan, as a final poke in the eye to Carter. Others say the weapons sweetened the deal. The usual bunch of twilight people who support the scenario have weighed in and been dismissed. But it IS hard to get around former Iranian president Bani-Sadr, who also thinks the deal went down. No one can come up with any real reason why he would cook something up.
Either way, this paved the way to a little something called Iran/Contra...you know, treason...but that's another day, another bottle of wine...

I do crack a smile when I see the credits and Affleck's dedication of the film to Jennifer, Violet, Seraphina and Samuel.

Hey, why not? I mean, if I made a movie, and had Jen Garner in my life I'd dedicate the film to her, even it was an industrial training film like CLOSING THE DEAL WITH A POTENTIAL GENERAL MOTORS CLIENT.
But you have to wonder...how come with all those rock music dudes that Winona has gone out with...how come none have dedicated a song or an album to her?

Well, she got to star in one by Soul Asylum (Without A Trace) as a political assassin...that must count for something, right?

The first time I saw the video, it was with some friends who were all laughing up their sleeves because I did not recognize Winona as the gunman...but it's still a good video and a very edgy part for her.
No, I would just have liked it if someone had been inspired to put their romance with her into music...I mean, a beauty for the ages, nothing compares to her...she should be worth AT LEAST a double album of music...

Best movie I have seen in awhile. Deserves the accolades. Affleck knows how to build suspense and his acting, while low-key, was perfect for the role. I was also somewhat surprised how good Bryan Cranston was in this picture. I am a big "Breaking Bad" fan and think he is a superb actor in that series, but it was cool to see him transfer those skills into another character. Did not even realize it was him until the credits.
