Sellers plays an Indian actor who messes up a party to which he definitely wasn't invited. I really wanted to love this film, but couldn't. Hit and miss bits. Maybe I'll give it another look some day.
But the great opening sequence gave me high hopes.

Mark Twain used to say the key to humour was repetition. THE PARTY is a prime example. First time I saw it, I could NOT understand why my aunt was already laughing when the English troops were only marching down the canyon into an ambush. She had seen it a number of times and was now laughing even BEFORE the jokes hit..I think you need to see it 2 or 3 times just to know what to appreciate when it was coming up. The same thing happened to me...I would start to laugh even BEFORE the butler started to get hammered. I would wind up telling my kids "Okay, here comes the chicken on top of the ladies head", or '..and NOBODY sees the shoe on the snack tray'. LIFE ran a great feature on the making of it, that had Henry Mancini moaning that a beautiful piece of music he had written would be totally forgotten because it was going in the part where Peter Sellers is FINALLY able to get into that john. It's my favorite Sellers film. Weirdly enough, it was one of his last to be released on video..legal problems kept it out of circulation for YEARS...
