To continue with my escapade of trying to rediscover the wonderful films of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger aka The Archers, my last stop will be this romantic comedy starring Roger Livesey and Wendy Hiller, set in the enchanting Scottish Hebrides...that is, until some idiot decides to re-release all the other Archers Films on DVD...
Young middle-class Englishwoman Joan Webster is determined to have the finer things in life, and to that end she plans to marry Sir Robert Bellinger, a wealthy, middle-aged industrialist whom she does not love. En route to the Island of Killoran (mythical), where her future husband resides, Joan is stranded on the nearby island of Mull. Inclement weather keeps her grounded for a week, during which time she falls in love with young, insouciant naval officer Torquil McNeil.
In the meantime, two more future polls will deal with Powel's solo efforts PEEPING TOM and THE EDGE OF THE WORLD...watch for them...

They used to show it a lot here in Canada...usually in the late spring/ early summer, when the hockey was over...right along with CARRY ON comedies and FAWLTY TOWERS re runs..and Monty Python every Sunday night..you'd get on the bus the next day and discuss the stuff you'd seen the night before.. LOCAL HERO had the same type of charm...

By the way, the film also stars a very young Petula Clark. ----- Imayne I'll have to check the movie out if I can find it on DVD. I absolutely have to see Petula Clark in it. ------ Her singing the song "Downtown" in "Girl Interrupted" is my favorite music in any of Winona Ryder's movies. ------ Rusty

Watched The Edge of the World last night. To say it's filmed in documentary style would almost be an insult. Its mystic and haunting atmosphere filmed by Powell is striking. Couldn't believe it was from 1937. Highly recommended!

I can see the answers (yes/no)... but what is the question? Anyway, nice to find my favourite film here on the forum dedicated to my favourite actor. As well as the Petula Clark connection to "Girl, Interrupted", there is a link to "The Age of Innocence" also. Michael Powell's second wife, Thelma Schoonmaker, edited that film (as well as most of Martin Scorsese's fims).
... And Criterion have brought out a Powell/Pressburger set, though it's nothing like complete, about half their films.
