There have been a couple of references to same-sex kissing (and a couple of 'outings' . . . right word?) in a couple of threads recently and, to be honest, it’s kind of led me to question what is probably a naive assumption on my part: that nearly all fans of Winona are straight . . . obviously not, and the fact that they’re not is no big deal, I guess. However, I do wonder what the percentages are, hence, the anonymous poll, if you care to take part! I also wonder if Winona deliberately cultivates a gay following (kiss with Brittany Murphy?) and what it is that gay guys + gals find appealing about Winona. Does Winona have a larger gay fan base than other celebs? . . . I don’t recall ever reading a thread that’s dealt with this subject.

Hi Paul,
Sexual preference aside, I assumed there were several kinds of fans:
1. Admirers -- those who admire the lady's talents, accomplishments, and body of work.
2. Adorers -- beyond admiration, these fans have deep affection for the lady, based on who she is, how she comports herself, the life she leads. She can be a role model or a fantasy best friend to an adorer.
3. Sensualists -- these fans add sexual attraction to their feelings about Winona.
It seems like all of us are a blending of these three (and other) fan types. For example, I am an admiring sensualist. So, regardless of sexual preference, I think we all share some of these qualities as we follow Winona's career.
Cheers, Charles

Charles I like your descriptions of how a person feels towards being a Winona Ryder fan. I am an "Adorer" all the way. ------------------------ As for my sexual preference, quoting Mongo from the movie "Blazing Saddles" ------- "AWWWW, Mongo straight"!!! ----- to appreciate the humor of my preference quote you've got to watch the movie. -------- Rusty

1) I feel that sexual orientation is largely irrelevant here. The important thing is we all have good feelings about this beautiful and talented lady. 2) I am personally straight but frankly the category is so broad that I am tempted to quote one of my favorite films Nins on the Run: "Ya call THAT goin' straight!?" (This from one guy dressed as nun to another dressed as nun.) My point is that this category includes so many variants it's largely meaningless---I won't get into details. 3) As to how people feel about Winona, I think Charles is probably right in saying we all have something of each. 4) The famous Brittany Murphy kiss was, I suspect, two celebrities twitting the paparazzi and the public when they got the chance: "Let's give 'em something to talk about."

Hi Stephen,
I would add to your opening statement and say,"I hope sexual preference won't ever be an issue at WRFP." I don't see it as relevant to our being fans of Winona's. I'll admit I was a bit surprised to see the thread initially, but I think the responses have been great.
The part I like about this subject and thread is that it is an opportunity to explore our similarities rather than our differences. Each of our definitions of a "fan" as applied to ourselves is intriguing to me and we've had some interesting posts.
Cheers, Charles

Wow! . . . quite a mix but all united in our admiration of Winona. Cool! The actual orientation of each person is only of statistical interest to me and I don’t have any issues with it. But, I do think it is relevant to ask if Winona has a large, gay following or is even considered a gay icon, in which case, why? Is it her, sometimes, short hair that can make her appear boyish? Or, is it some other factor? I really don’t know! I read this in one of Winona’s interviews a few days ago (Harper’s Bazaar, August 2000): (Interviewer): “I read that a lot of your friends are gay men. Which is interesting because you love old movies, you like vintage clothing, you have a good sense of humour – in a way you’re kind of like a really, cute, gay guy.
(Winona): “Well, I don’t like to generalize. A lot of my friends are real guys – it’s not like me and a bunch of drag queens. But I did grow up in San Francisco, right near the Castro. My mom made the first documentary about AIDS, and I was in it.”
(Interviewer): “Didn’t you get beaten up in seventh grade for dressing up like Jimmy Cagney?”
(Winona): “I was wearing an old Salvation Army-shop boy’s suit. I had a hall pass, so I went to the [girl’s] bathroom. I heard people saying, “Hey, fa**ot.” They slammed my head into a locker. I fell to the ground and they started to kick the sh*t out of me. I had to have stitches. The school kicked me out, not the bullies.”Obviously, these experiences in Winona’s life would suggest that she has a lot of empathy with the gay community. It reinforces one of the things that really impress me about Winona: that is, her appeal knows no boundaries in terms of age, sex, race, religion or sexual orientation . . . she is truly loved by all! My fan profile? I admire the way I adore her sensuality ;D

Wolf, I think you read my mind . . . I did contemplate putting in two other categories i.e. "undecided" and "confused", but in the end I thought I would just keep it simple. Btw, everyone, please vote if you haven't already done so and don't object. Ta!
