I'm really surprised more people didn't vote for Veronica Sawyer...

I had to think hard about this poll. I guess ones's first love is always special (which for me would have meant Jo March - the first of her roles that really made me sit up and pay attention), but I've opted for Gemma Dillard instead. That's because I think Square Dance the most outrageously overlooked and underrated film in Ms. Ryder's ouevre. Even in this neighbourhood it only rates 3 stars - the same as the disappointing Mr. Deeds. Jo March made me go investigate her other films, several of which I had missed completely, this film was a real hidden treasure. Judging from its gross figures I suspect everybody missed Square Dance first time around.
But, having obtained a DVD copy (at extortionate cost) I fell in love with this well made, well acted movie. The four principals are all excellent, especially Jane Alexander and the central conceit of the film, using a square dance as the pattern for young Gemma's life works really well. She moves from one partner (her grandfather) to another (her mother) before returning "home". An interesting contrast is made between this square dance and the line dance of her mother - a dance that ultimately leads nowhere. Daniel Petrie is a fine director who also deserves a wider audience.
Square Dance is a subtle and serious piece of film-making that is worth a second look. In my opinion a true hidden gem (sorry, couldn't resist the pun). DVD's are like hen's teeth, but VHS copies appear on ebay from time to time. Worth every penny.

Great for you, Anglican, finally getting to see Winona's outstanding performance in "Squaredance". ----- Winona's first starring role as Gemma, in the movie, is a must see for any self respecting Winona Ryder fan. ----- I was so pleased to see "Squaredance" released on region one DVD back in March 2003. Up until then the only copies of the movie I had were a very badly edited VHS copy recorded off network TV and a used copy on prerecorded VHS. -------- Rusty

I don't think I can vote or pick, I mean, what does 'favourite Winona Ryder film role' even mean? What does 'favourite' even mean? Is it your favourite movie that has WR in it? Or is it your favourite WR acting that could potentially be in a crap movie? (Reality Bites) I love all her movies and all her roles, but in a biased way, because I love her. But deep down I agree with some of my friends who do think Reality Bites was not that good of a movie, yet her acting was superb and it had the 90's coolness...hmm

Hi Femo,
Yes, there has always been a debate over "Reality Bites;" you might want to do a search and see how widely opinions differ. This poll is just asking which is your favorite character/performance; the movie might not be a favorite at all. We were just curious about the opinions of the members.

It's taken me a while to figure this one out, but I think the role as Susanna Kaysen from Girl, Interrupted is her best acting performance to date, personally. Although, the wonderful roles I fondly remember (and still view, eh-hum) in Beetlejuice, Bram Stoker's Dracula, Little Women and Love Is Not Enough are not far behind...but each film role of hers has that worthwhile effect that you just can't forget. And maybe thats because Ms. Winona Ryder is just that good. I mean we just can't forget her, can we?
And now, it seems, she has not forgotten all of us - her worldwide adoring fans.

Yes, picking one Winona Ryder movie role over all her other outstanding ones can be a challenging choice. ----- Our Winona has had so many memorable screen performances over the years. ----- Rusty
