A slightly old article...
Tainted Jury Pool?
October 25, 2002
Is the jury pool tainted in Winona Ryder's shoplifting trial? "Celebrity Justice's" own Ross Mc-Laughlin digs into the case and says, "Prospective jurors are being asked tough questions and coming back with tough answers."
One of the most crucial issues in the Ryder trial is the prosecution motion to admit prior bad acts, evidence this was not the actress's first run-in with store security.
"Celebrity Justice's" own Pat Lalama says the judge may have ruled on that motion.
The issue of Winona Ryder’s so-called prior acts is critical to both sides. For the prosecution, it may shed light on whether she actually had the specific criminal intent required to commit the crime of shoplifting. The prosecution most certainly would like a jury to hear that Ryder might have a history of this kind of behavior, allegedly at stores like Barney's and Neiman Marcus in Beverly Hills. It could bolster the prosecution's contention that this is her Modus Operandi. As for Ryder's defense team, they don't want the jury to hear any mention of prior acts. They want to show that the Saks incident was simply a mistake, and that she lacked the criminal intent to commit a crime."
